• Rod bearing failure: CRITICAL: Rod bearings are under-spec from factory. Can fail without warning, destroying engine. Preventative replacement strongly recommended at 60-80k km. This is the #1 concern with this engine.
• Throttle actuator failure: Individual throttle body actuators fail, causing limp mode.
• VANOS solenoid failure: VANOS system solenoids can fail.
• Oil consumption: High-rev V8 consumes some oil. 1L per 3000km is common.
• Car is 15 years old — expect age-related wear: rubber seals, bushings, water pump, AC compressor

• BMW S65 V8 (M3 E90/E92/E93) has a critical rod bearing wear issue. Bearings fail without warning, causing catastrophic engine failure. Preventive replacement costs €2,500-5,000. If not done, engine replacement costs €8,000-15,000. ALWAYS check if rod bearings were replaced.
• CRITICAL: BMW E90/E92 M3 S65 V8 has rod bearings that are under-spec from factory. Can fail without warning at any mileage above 50k km, destroying the engine. ALWAYS ask if rod bearings have been replaced. If not, budget €1,500-2,500 for preventative replacement. This is THE #1 concern with this car.
• CRITICAL: BMW S65 V8 (E90/E92 M3) has a well-known rod bearing wear issue. The high-revving nature of this engine (8,400 rpm redline) combined with tight bearing clearances causes premature wear. Symptoms: knocking from bottom of engine, metallic debris in oil. Preventive bearing replacement is strongly recommended at 80-100k km. Cost €2,000-3,500 preventive, €8,000-15,000 if engine is damaged. ALWAYS do an oil analysis before buying.
