Serious risks

• Wastegate rattle: Wastegate actuators develop play — rattling under load. BMW updated design twice. Turbo replacement may be needed.
• High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP): HPFP failure is common — stalling, long cranking. BMW extended warranty on some. Can send metal debris into fuel system.
• Electric water pump/thermostat: Electric water pump and thermostat fail without warning — overheating risk. Preventive replacement advised at 80-100k km.
• Charge pipe and BOV failure: Plastic charge pipe blows off under boost. Aftermarket aluminium replacement recommended.
• GDI carbon buildup: Direct injection leads to carbon deposits on intake valves. Walnut blasting restores performance.
• Injector issues: Piezo injectors can fail — causes misfires. Index 11+ injectors are improved.

Additional notes

• Older BMW with 200k+ km will likely need suspension refresh (control arms, bushings: €600-1,200), possibly cooling system components (water pump, thermostat: €300-700), and various sensor replacements. Budget accordingly.
• Vehicle is 15+ years old. Age-related issues: rubber seals/hoses degrade, electrical connectors corrode, suspension bushings wear. Not specific to any engine, but expect €500-1,500/year in age-related maintenance beyond normal service items.
• BMW N54 3.0 twin-turbo (335i, 535i, Z4 35i): legendary performance but known for: (1) Waste gate rattle — turbo actuators wear, causing rattling. BMW dealer fix is twin turbo replacement at €3,000-5,000. (2) High-pressure fuel pump failure — sudden loss of power. €500-1,000. (3) Fuel injector failure — coking and cracking. €200-400 each, 6 total. (4) Water pump/thermostat electronic failure — €400-800. The N55 single-turbo successor is more reliable.
• Any car with 200k+ km requires extra scrutiny. At this mileage: suspension components are worn (bushings, ball joints, shocks), seals and gaskets are hardened, electrical connectors corrode, and major components approach end-of-life. For luxury cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) the cost of 200k+ km maintenance can exceed the car's value. Always get a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) and budget 15-25% of purchase price for immediate maintenance.
